Godly Living

Scripture: Deuteronomy 32-34

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn that God gives us godly leaders to remind us to follow God.
  • Students will learn that leaders are human and sin.
  • Students will learn that even though leaders may sin, God still wants us to listen when they tell us to follow Him.
  • Students will learn about those who followed God in the Bible.

Guiding Question: How can students learn from others in the Bible how to follow God?

Materials: Bibles

Procedure: Teach students the story of Moses’ goodbye to the Israelites. Point out that although Moses had sinned and would not be allowed to enter the Promised Land, he still encouraged the Israelites to follow God. God encourages us today to follow Him so that we may serve Him, bring others to know Him, and live out a life filled with joy in Him.

Introduce the activity. Explain that sometimes we learn more information about people in the Old Testament from scriptures about them in the New Testament. Have students go on a treasure hunt in the New Testament to find new information about people in the Old Testament like Moses. Examples: Moses 2 Timothy 3:8, Matthew 17:3-4, Jude 1:9, Acts 26:22,  Abraham Acts 7:2, Luke 16:24, Luke 1:55, James 2:21, Hebrews 11:8, Matthew 1:1, Matthew 8:11, Elijah Luke 4:25, James 5:17, Luke 1:17, Mark 9:4-30, Joshua Acts 7:45, etc.

Have students decide what that new information tells us about those people. Ask them why they think the New Testament writers added this additional information. What does what we know about those people tell us about what God wants from them in their lives?

Additional Questions: How can students use the Bible to plan for a godly life?

Supplemental Activity: Have the students research Bible verse about following God and what God expects from us. From the verses, have the students create two goals for how they can live their life/make changes to their lifestyle to live for God.
