Serving on the Job

Scripture: Acts 3:1-4:31, Mark 16:15-16

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of Peter and John going before the Sanhedrin.
  • Students will learn that Christian are sometimes persecuted for their beliefs.
  • Students will learn that they need to share their faith even when it is difficult.
  • Students will develop an understanding of how to tell others about God wherever they are.

Guiding Question: How does God help us serve as missionaries when our job takes us to another country?

Materials: The materials for the service project will be determined by the speaker’s needs for those where he/she is working and serving others.

Procedure: Review the story of Peter and John before the Sanhedrin and focus on the challenges that Peter and John had to overcome. Explain to the students that sometimes, people’s jobs take them to other countries and that can be a challenge to overcome. However, this provides an opportunity for those people to serve God where they are by sharing God with those around them who may not have heard of God.

Introduce the students to a member of your church congregation whose job has taken them to another country and took the opportunity to mission to those around them. Allow this person to share their experience with the students, including day to day life, the country’s culture, how they shared God with others, and what challenges God helped them overcome. If possible, have them to share pictures, videos, souvenirs, food, etc. to help students have a better understanding of the culture. Have the students complete a service project that would best meet the needs of those where the speaker worked and served as a missionary.

Additional Questions:

  • What jobs could take people to other countries and how could they serve as missionaries?

Supplemental Activity: Let interested students research about people who have served in other countries for their job and taken the opportunity to share Jesus with others at the same time.
