Big, Big Numbers

Scripture:  I Kings 4,7,9,11 and 2 Chronicles 8

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God blessed Solomon in many ways, just like He blesses us in many ways.
  • Students will learn God gave Solomon amazing wisdom and riches which Solomon could have used to serve God. God also gives us different gifts to use in His service.
  • Students will learn Solomon eventually became distracted by the things his wealth, power and fame gave him. We too, can become distracted by things in the world and begin making poor choices.
  • Students will learn how to write large numbers.

Guiding Question: How can students learn to write large numbers?

Materials: Paper, pencils, (or whiteboards/markers)

Procedure: Review the story of Solomon’s Kingdom from the scripture above. Remind students that we are blessed by God in many ways just as Solomon was blessed. There are many all over the world that go without basic needs and we are blessed to have access to those things. God often blesses us so that we may share our blessings with others and serve others. This provides an opportunity to share God with them.

Introduce the activity. Have the students practice writing and reading large numbers like King Solomon’s net worth is estimated to have been $2.1 trillion or each year he received and estimated 25 tons (50,000 pounds) of gold worth an estimated $1.1 billion. After students practice writing a few large numbers, have the students split into two teams. Give each team something to write on and assign a writer. Then give the students a large number and the first team to write it correctly and show it gets a point.

Additional Questions: How can students compare large numbers?
Supplementary Activity: Have the students split into two teams. Give each team something to write on and assign a writer. Give the students two numbers such as 1 billion and 2 million. Ask which is larger and why? The first team to give the answer correctly gets a point.
