Food Temperatures

Scripture: Exodus 11-12

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn God expects us to obey Him.
  • Students will learn sometimes there are horrible earthly consequences for disobeying God.
  • Students will learn obeying God can often protect us from earthly consequences.
  • Students will learn about the safe internal temperatures of food when cooking.

Guiding Question: How can we avoid negative consequences?

Materials: Foods of your choice (see procedure)

Procedure: Share the story of the First Passover from the scriptures above. Explain how those celebrating the passover had to obey God’s commands for the passover and that protected them. Tell the students that God expects and wants us to obey Him so we can show Him we love and honor Him while also protecting ourselves from earthly consequences. Bad earthly consequences can happen we disobey God that can also affect people close to us.

Introduce the activity. Remind students about what was being cooked during Passover and ask how they think it was cooked. Teach students about the safe internal temps of cooked foods and reheated leftovers. Explain why it is important to have a safe internal temperature when cooking. Bring in appropriate food thermometers to help students practice taking temps of foods properly. (Your choice of food, just bring in a variety so students can see the variety in temperatures)

Additional Questions: How can students apply food safety tips to cooking?

Supplemental Activity: Have students create a recipe for several foods that includes how to cook to a safe temperature and what the safe temperature should be.
