Scripture: Genesis 3-4

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of the first sins, focusing especially on mentions of gardens and growing food
  • Students will learn the basic rules for handling and preparing food safely
  • Students will participate in an activity which allows them to practice food handling rules

Guiding Question: What is the best way to handle and prepare food safely?

Materials: plastic gloves, hair ties/nets, marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate bars

Procedure: Review the story of the first sins, focusing especially on the mentions of gardens and growing food. Teach/review with students the rules for handling and preparing food safely. (Wash and/or glove hands, tie back hair, don’t sneeze or cough on food, etc.) Have students wash hands carefully. If desired they can try preparing food while also gloved. Make sure their hair is pulled back in a hair tie or hair net. Allow them to assemble cold s’mores and eat them. (Note:If you have the ability to show videos, go to www.noawalkaway.com and play one of the food safety videos while students are enjoying their s’mores.)

Additional Question: What do restaurants do to keep food safe for people to eat?

Supplemental Activity: Select another activity on the No A? Walk Away! website and use it to teach younger students about food safety.
