Welcome to Your New Home

Scripture: Genesis 10-11

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will review the story of the Tower of Babel
  • Students will learn that once the people were dispersed all over the world, they had to start over in their new homes.
  • Students will learn many people around the world must run from their homes because of war and other dangers.

Guiding Question: What can we do to help refugees adapt to their new homes?

Materials: Materials will vary depending upon the scope of your project

Procedure: Review the story of the Tower of Babel. Discuss how once God dispersed the people around the world, those people had to start over somewhere new. Explain to the students that many people each year have to flee their homes because of wars and other dangers. These refugees are often forced to start a new life in a new country. Discuss with students what challenges refugees must face in their new homes. Share any research you have done on refugee groups that may have settled in your area and why they are refugees. Help the students develop a campaign to collect items to create welcome kits for recent arrivals to your area. (Note: Your local refugee center may have specific needs which are greater.)

Possible Items for Refugee Welcome Kits:

Available services to help refugees (refugee centers, language classes, etc.)
Fliers for local businesses (grocery stores, drug stores, etc.)
Coupons
Free samples
Bible
Invitation to Church
Snacks
Bottles of water

Additional Question: What are the most important needs refugees have when relocating?

Supplemental Activity: Have students interview former refugees. What have they learned since relocating, they wish they had known earlier? Does what they share give your students ideas for additional service projects to serve refugees.
