Mentoring Questions to Get Young People Talking

Hopefully, as a ministry volunteer you are engaging with those you serve in some sort of mentoring capacity. Many young people seem to blossom when they get the full attention of an adult mentor. For others though, opening up to an adult – even a Christian one they have known for years – can be difficult. There are some questions you can ask though, that might just lower their defenses a bit and get them talking.

  • If you could ask God one question, what would it be? Often their answer to this question will reveal very real questions and doubts with which they may be struggling.
  • What is something you wish more people knew about you? The answer to this question often reveals not only how they see themselves, but also how they believe others perceive them. Either piece can be inaccurate…for example, they may say they wish everyone knew they were kind, when most people already believe it to be true. When perceptions are inaccurate, it can reveal issues they are having with their self esteem or in their relationships with others.
  • What is your perfect day/What does your perfect future look like? This can reveal a lot about their priorities, desires and dreams.
  • If you could change any rule you currently have to obey somewhere in your life, what would it be? This answer may reveal nothing at all, a sense of humor or some very real issue.
  • What would you do if you ruled the world? This answer can reveal a lot about their priorities, concerns and dreams.
  • What is one question you hope I don’t ask? This one is tricky. If they answer it honestly, though, it can help you discover where they are struggling.
  • How can I help you? Often young people know what they need most. They may be wrong, but it’s more likely they will save you a lot of trial and error.
  • What specifically can I pray about for you? Once again, if they are honest this can point you to their struggles or concerns.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of great open ended questions to ask the kids and teens to whom you minister. Asking them might get you the information you need to help them the most – including spiritually.
