Evaluating Children’s Ministry Bible Class Teachers

Asking Kids the Best Questions - Teach One Reach OneEvaluation has often been considered almost a curse word in churches. We are afraid of losing volunteers – at times an already scarce resource. We don’t want to have to possibly hurt someone’s feelings because they need improvement in some area. We don’t want to be thought of as “judging”. (By the way, evaluation is godly. Judging would be assuming someone is a good or bad teacher by how they look, their wealth, etc.)

Yet not evaluating the effectiveness of your volunteers could be harming your students in possibly serious ways. Things may be happening in your classrooms that would make you cringe – sometimes even by godly people who love God and their students. Even if your ministry is one of the best in the world, you are missing opportunities to be even more effective in reaching the kids you serve.

Teach One Reach One has developed a free evaluation tool to help. Designed by people with degrees in education, it is formatted to be used even by people who have little if any background in teaching. The questions are designed to be answered by either “yes” or “no”.  It covers enough areas to give a pretty thorough assessment of each volunteer and your program in general.

This is not to be used to criticize, “fire” or demean your volunteers. (Note: In some very rare cases, you may need to remove a volunteer for student safety and well-being.) Rather it will give you an idea of where you need to provide training or personal coaching. You may even find some areas can be addressed proactively in the future by providing new volunteers with training and written policies.

Some people are gifted by God to teach children. Others love children and will do their best, but need additional training and support to be effective. You may need to change curriculum or provide mentors. It may seem like extra work for you and other leaders, but the results make the effort worthwhile.

Using our free evaluation tool will give you the information you need to enhance what you are currently doing to reach your students for God. You may find you even have more volunteers because they know they will get the support, encouragement and training they need. Feeling equipped will help them reach their godly potential as teachers. Try it and contact us to let us know what you think.
