Have you looked through the Teach One Reach One website and wondered whether switching your Bible class, faith-based tutoring program or mission team over to using our activities is worth the effort? Although we were taught to teach this way in my education program in college, I have found not every university promotes meaningful, hands-on, memorable classroom activities. After all, they just create more work for the teacher.
I would love for you to read the book The End of Molasses Classes: Getting Our Kids Unstuck–101 Extraordinary Solutions for Parents and Teachers, by Ron Clark. Ron Clark was a Disney teacher of the year many years ago now. His first book was a must read for all students. This one should be required reading for all teachers – paid or volunteer. Mr. Clark started an academy here in Atlanta. I won’t give away the fun of the book, but he is the ultimate believer in meaningful, memorable, hands-on, experiential learning.
Your program probably doesn’t have the resources to do things entirely the way he has with his academy. Notice throughout the book though, what those types of experiences do for the students. If they can change lives using these types of activities for secular subjects, imagine what we can do when those types of activities are used in Bible classes and faith-based tutoring programs!
Our activities at Teach One Reach One are the Ron Clark type of experiential learning, but for the limited budget most of you have. The items you need for our activities can often be found objects. objects recycled by your families or items collected in a stone soup sort of way from your supporters.
The next time you are looking for a good book to read, this is the one I would highly recommend. Reading it will give you the inspiration you need to try our activities. If you are still a little nervous or unsure, click on the “Contact Us” tab on our website. Let us know how we can help. We want every child on this planet to experience God in ways that are meaningful, memorable and experiential. If we can do that, we may just be able to make the world a little better!
